Hollow Glass Waveguides
Description
art photonics’ Hollow Glass Waveguides (HWG Series) are advanced fiber solutions designed for efficient, low-loss transmission of infrared (IR) radiation across the 2–18 μm spectral range. Featuring a unique hollow silica glass core, HWG fibers eliminate Fresnel reflection losses at their terminations, ensuring superior beam quality and low divergence compared to conventional solid-core IR fibers. These waveguides are ideal for delivering power from mid-IR laser sources such as Er:YAG, OPO, CO-, and CO₂-lasers.
HWG fibers are available with core diameters of 500 μm, 750 μm, and 1000 μm, and are protected by a double polymer jacket for enhanced mechanical flexibility. Their innovative construction enables high transmittance, minimal bending loss (1 dB at a 360° bend with 400 mm diameter), and excellent thermal tolerance from –50°C to +90°C. With certified performance under DIN EN ISO 9001:2015, these waveguides are perfectly suited for demanding applications in spectroscopy, laser surgery, environmental sensing, and quantum cascade laser systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
HWG cables are free from Fresnel reflection losses at their ends due to their hollow core structure, resulting in more efficient power delivery.
The recommended max power level is 10W for HWG-500, 20W for HWG-750, and 30W for HWG-1000.
The operating temperature range for HWG cables is -50°C to +90°C.
The minimum elastic bending radius is 150 times the inner HWG diameter.
HWG cables are used for laser power delivery for Er:YAG, OPO, CO- & CO2-lasers, flexible cables for Quantum Cascade Lasers and Spectral Systems, and spectral analysis of gas mixtures.
