Did You know?
High-power fiber cables are specially designed for laser delivery where the laser power output exceeds a few watts. Typically, these cables are made of fused silica, and they can be a few millimeters wide in diameter thus supporting many modes. High-power fiber cables can propagate laser light with power levels as high as 800 W without receiving any damage. In some designs, the cable ends are connected to special copper connectors that absorb the heat and protect the fused silica glass from breaking. Other designs take advantage of the air-gap-ferrule technology where the connectors themselves act as heat sinks. These fibers are usually wrapped in a thick jacket which shields them from environmental effects and allows operation at very low and high temperatures. High-power fiber cables are an excellent delivery method for laser drilling, cutting, and welding applications as they are flexible and durable.
